The Preparation
Butter both outer sides of each slice of bread generously with salted butter.
Layer cheese slices to cover the full surface of one bread slice.
Add cooked sausage or bacon if using.
Top with the second buttered bread slice.
Cook in a skillet over medium-low heat, pressing gently, until golden and cheese is melted, about 3 to 4 minutes per side.
Slice and serve.
