Bourbon, a little sugar, bitters and an orange peel, built right in the glass over one big cube. The original cocktail, and still the one everything else gets measured against.
4 steps, about 3 minutes start to finish.
1. Add the syrup and bitters to a rocks glass. (With a sugar cube: cube, bitters and a small splash of water, muddled until the sugar dissolves.)
2. Pour in the bourbon and add one big ice cube.
3. STIR 20 to 30 seconds, until the outside of the glass is cold. Never shaken.
4. Squeeze the orange peel skin-side down over the glass, rub it around the rim, and drop it in. Add a cherry if you like.
“One big cube melts slowly, so the last sip tastes like the first. The orange oil sprayed across the top is half of what you smell with every sip, so do not skip the squeeze.”
